   Sailing - Race Training

Over the years Fivestar Sailing is proud of its racing record. This is no small part due to this Race Training program.

Whether inshore or offshore racing, we can help you put a team together on your own boat or, if would like to join a team to get more racing experience we can put a program together for you.

The Race Training program is tailored depending on the experience of the crews taking part and whether the course is inshore racing or an offshore series such as a ‘Fastnet’ program.

We take part in a number of events throughout the year including the Warsash Spring and Hamble Winter Series. In the run up to each series we have ‘Race Training’ Weekends and where possible some of the practise sessions are video recorded to provide feedback for debrief sessions after the sailing.

The Spring and Winter series races take place on Sundays and we normally undertake race training on the first two or three Saturdays during the course of each Series. We recommend taking part in the races as it gives you opportunity to put what you learn into practise.

Race Training RORC, JOG, Cowes & Cork

As the country's leading race training school, measured by past performance, we take pride in ensuring that all our crew are fully prepared before they join us on a race. We have a number of weekend courses on offer to suit all levels. These include: 'Introduction to Race Training', 'Advanced Race Training', 'Advanced Sail Handling', 'Race Navigation' and 'Introduction to Match Racing'. Check out our Racing Calendar - Special Events page.

Our race training courses will give you the chance to both train and race at a realistic price. The courses target such things as spinnaker work, gybing and sail trim. There are theory sessions prior to the racing season on topics ranging from basic tactics through to weather for racing and race navigation; all run by top, expert, people.

The racing year itself usually starts off with the Hamble Spring Series, and the Junior Offshore Group (JOG) Series. The JOG is usually the first offshore racing to start, with the popular Easter Cowes to Cherbourg/Cherbourg to Cowes race.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) season in the UK gets under way with the Cervantes Trophy, which heads off to France from Cowes. From then on there is a race about every second weekend, culminating in the Round Britain and Ireland Race.

Here are just few of the successful yachtsmen and women who have trained with Five Star...

Shirley Robinson

No. 1 Women's Match Racer & Olympic Gold medal winner.

Jessie Cuthbert

British Women's Match Racing Champion & twice World Youth Champion.

Sally Cuthbert

4 times World Youth Champion.

Andy Beadsworth

Yacht Racing - Charter

Fivestar Sailing has a fleet of J109’s available for race charter. They are great boats to sail and are guaranteed to bring a grin to everyone who sails them in any sort of breeze. With their asymmetric spinnakers they will happily sail at 10 plus knots. One was clocked doing 17 knots on windy Friday of Cowes Week!

All our boats are comprehensively equipped with Brookes and Gatehouse instrumentation, racing sails and are always race ready with ‘clean bottoms’.

Boats can be chartered either on a bareboat or skippered basis depending on the skippers and crews experience and are available for both inshore and offshore racing.

We are also able to provide other racing yachts if required including J120’s and Beneteau 40.7’s.
