   RYA Start Sailing Course

This course provides a short introduction to sail cruising for novices. By the end of the course you will have experienced steering a yacht sail handling rope work and be aware of safety on board.

Competent Crew Practical

This course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines on board.

The minimum course duration is five days, but it is commonly run over three weekends or three days plus a weekend. If you have previously completed the Start Yachting course, the Competence Crew course can be completed in three or four days

Course Content :

Basic seamanship and helmsmanship

Ability After Course :

By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines on board.

Minimum Duration :

The minimum duration is 5 days, but it is commonly run over 3 weekends or 3 days plus a weekend. If you have previously completed the Start Yachting course, the Competent Crew course can be completed in 3 or 4 days.

The continuous course runs from 1800 on the Sunday and completes on the following Friday. For the non-continuous courses conducted over weekends you should join the yacht by 1900 on the Friday and expect to leave not before 1600 on the following Sunday. 

Whilst on these courses you can expect to stay anywhere between Chichester and Poole, occasionally France and the Channel Islands. Some nights may be spent in a marina , others at anchor, perhaps another against a town quay wall.

Day Skipper Practical

The practical course gives you a chance to take charge on short passages under instruction with plenty of advice and help from the instructor. Designed for tidal waters.

SAIL CRUISING

Suggested minimum pre-course experience :

5 days, 100 miles, 4 night hours on board a sailing yacht.

Assumed Knowledge :

Basic navigation and helmsmanship. It is recommended that you attend the Day Skipper shorebased course before taking this practical course.

Course Content :

Pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation.

Ability After Course :

Can skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

Minimum Duration :

5 days - either as 3 weekends or 3 days plus 2 days.

Coastal Skipper Practical Certificate

This is an advanced skippering course for yachtsmen and women who have considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation and are usually aspiring towards a Certificate of Competence. Designed for Tidal waters. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages under the guidance of the instructor.

Suggested minimum pre-course experience :

15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours.

Assumed Knowledge :

Boat handling to the standard of the Day Skipper practical sail cruising course and navigation to the standard of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster® shorebased course.

Course Content :

Passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations.

Ability After Course :

Skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night

Minimum Duration :

5 days.

The course runs from 1800 on the Sunday and completes on the following Friday, however, if you wish to take the examination for the RYA / MCA Certificate the course will finish Saturday on completion of examining all candidates.  

Whilst on these courses you can expect to stay anywhere between Chichester and Poole, occasionally France and the Channel Islands. Some nights may be spent in a marina , others at anchor, perhaps another against a town quay wall.

Coastal Skipper Practical Exam (MCA)

A practical examination leading to a RYA Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence.

Course Type :

SAIL CRUISING, Adult Course

Suggested minimum pre-course experience :

30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours (for holders of Coastal Skipper Practical Course Certificate 20 days, 400 miles)

Assumed Knowledge :

VHF operators certificate or Short Range Certificate plus First Aid Certificate

Course Content :

Collision avoidance, safety, boat handling, seamanship, passage making and navigation, meteorology and ability as skipper

Ability After Course :

Ability to skipper a sailing yacht on coastal passages by day and night. To skipper commercial vessels under 24 metres up to 20 miles from a safe haven.

Minimum Duration :

6 - 10 hours for one person and 8 - 14 hours for two people.

The practical examination normally runs at the conclusion of the Coastal Skipper Practical course and finishes Saturday on completion of examining all candidates.  

Whilst on these courses you can normally expect to sail anywhere between Chichester and Poole.

Yachtmaster® Practical Preparation

This is an advanced skippering course for yachtsmen and women who have considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation and are usually aspiring towards a Certificate of Competence. Designed for Tidal waters.

50 Days at Sea, 5 Days as skipper, 2500 miles, 5 Passages over 60 miles, including 2 over night and 2 as skipper.

Theory to Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster® level. Sailing to Coastal Skipper practical standard. First Aid Certificate, VHF Short Range Certificate

Course Content :

Safety, passage planning, pilotage by day and night, use electronic navigation equipment, boat handling and emergency situations

Ability After Course :

Enable you to successfully complete the RYA / MCA Yachtmaster® Examination

Minimum Duration :

5 days

This course is specifically set up to lead you into the exam with a successful result.

Time is spent improving your skills so that blind sailing hold no terrors for you, crossing a tidal bar at the correct time to have 1.5m under the keel and, above all, you will be a smooth operator when it comes to picking up man overboards under sail or motor.

Yachtmaster® Offshore is not a push over and, as a result, there is a justifiable 'high' on a successful outcome.

The course runs from 1800 on the Sunday and completes on the following Friday, however, if you wish to take the examination for the RYA / MCA Certificate the course will finish Saturday on completion of examining all candidates.  

Expect to stay anywhere between Chichester and Poole, occasionally France and the Channel Islands. Some nights may be spent in a marina , others at anchor, perhaps another against a town quay wall.

Yachtmaster® Practical Exam

Yachtmaster® Offshore practical examinations can be taken under sail or power. The candidate or a training centre provides the boat and the RYA provides an examiner. The Yachtmaster® Offshore is competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour. The examination normally follows on from completion of the Yachtmaster® Practical Preparation course.

Course Type :

SAIL CRUISING, Adult Course

Prerequisites qualifications and experience:

Candidates must be aged 18 or over. 50 Days at Sea, 5 Days as skipper, 2500 miles, 5 Passages over 60 miles, including 2 over night and 2 as skipper.
A restricted (VHF only) Radio Operator’s Certificate or a GMDSS Short Range Certificate or higher grade of marine radio certificate.
A valid first aid certificate. First aid qualifications held by Police, Fire and Armed Services are also acceptable.

Boat to be used:

The boat used must be between 7m (23ft) and 24m (78ft) be in sound, seaworthy condition and equipped to the standard set out in the RYA book Cruising Yacht Safety (code C8). The boat must be equipped with a full up to date set of charts and navigational publications and be efficiently crewed as the examiner will not take part in the management of boat during the exam.

Course Content :

Candidates will be set tasks to demonstrate their ability as skipper of an offshore sailing yacht, including questions on collision avoidance, navigation, pilotage, meteorology and boat handling.

Ability after successful completion:

Can skipper an offshore sailing yacht by day or night.

Minimum Duration :

The Yachtmaster® Offshore test lasts 8-12 hours for one candidate and 10-18 hours for two. No more than two candidates can be examined in 24 hours and no more than four candidates can be examined in one 2 day session. The exam can be taken in a power or sailing vessel.

Yachtmaster® Offshore is not a push over and, as a result, there is a justifiable 'high' on a successful outcome.

The RYA / MCA Certificate examination will finish Saturday on completion of examining all candidates.
